The Making of Basilico

This candle began with letters. Over the past year, the same quiet request kept arriving in our inbox — a candle scented only with naturals, nothing borrowed from a lab. We could not walk past it.

Most candles are scented with fragrance oil — a composition built in a lab to smell like a garden. You asked what happens when you skip the imitation and go to the garden itself. It took us five months to answer.

Basilico is our first candle scented with nothing but essential oils, absolutes and resinoids. No synthetics. Only what the plants themselves surrendered — pressed from peel, distilled from leaf, drawn from root and wood.

At its centre is Egyptian basil. The name comes from basileus, the Greek word for king — the humble kitchen herb that always carried royal in its name. Around it, mandarin at first light, bergamot, geranium petals, cool spearmint. Beneath it, creamy cabreuva wood and Haitian vetiver root. A fragrance that speaks in green.

The Slow Part

Natural oils do not behave like their synthetic copies. They are living materials — a harvest changes them, a season changes them, an hour of heat can ruin them. Working with them means working on their terms.

Each oil is weighed on a jeweler's scale, to a hundredth of a gram. Then the blend is sealed in amber glass and put away in the dark — a stage called maceration.

The oils arrive as strangers. Different viscosities, different densities, different tempers — a thin, bright citrus next to a slow, syrupy resin. Nothing is added to them. No alcohol, no solvent, no carrier — only the pure oils, exactly as the plants gave them. Everything the blend needs is already inside: the linalool that makes basil green, the geraniol that makes geranium rosy, the citrus aldehydes, the resin's quiet acids.

In the dark, molecule by molecule, these constituents begin to bond. Sharp aldehydes settle into softer, more stable forms. Terpenes take in whispers of oxygen and deepen. New compounds form that existed in none of the oils alone — rounder than any of their parents. This is not poetry; it is chemistry — slow at room temperature, impossible to hurry. The edges dissolve, and what began as a crowd of separate voices sets into one dense, seamless accord.

Maceration takes weeks — often months. And with an all-natural composition it matters most of all: the longer the blend rests, the rounder and richer the scent becomes, and the fuller its presence once the candle is lit.

And this is where natural materials part ways with their synthetic copies for good. An essential oil is a record of one specific harvest — a drier summer, an earlier frost, and the basil is not quite the same basil. This exact blend can never be repeated. Not next year. Not by anyone. Every batch is, by nature, one of a kind.

Then, and only then, the blend meets our coconut–apricot wax, and the FSC-certified wooden wick is set by hand. One more wait follows — two weeks of curing in the wax itself, as the oils settle into the cooled structure and the scent a candle gives off when lit becomes steady and full. It is the quiet step that decides how generously a candle fills a room. Only after that is Basilico offered to a flame.

Basilico is in its final stage now.

Twenty. No More.

A process this slow does not scale — and we decided not to force it. Basilico exists as a limited edition of twenty candles, each numbered by hand. When they are gone, they are gone.

To light Basilico is to enter the garden hour — a quiet dialogue between herb and citrus, cold and warm. Slow mornings. Thoughtful afternoons. Any moment when clarity feels like luxury.
